- Props-gifts from the west seen as valuable
- not much wealth
- divided between older people and younger people in the house
- sense of community and togetherness
West Germany
- seems very business related
- very formal
- quite forced relationships
- more food choices at the western barbeque
- more sophisticated atmosphere
- Camera circling around characters hinting at spy narrative and the walls closing in on him
Scene 2:
- People seen wearing colourful and vibrant clothes
- luxury colours
- shelves stacked uniformly, not normal for Martin to see in the East
- Laid back police- not caring about job/easy
- Music sets the scene and gives atmosphere of the time and era that we are in.
- branded clothes represent post modernism & possible patriarchy in Germany- he's wearing Puma & Adidas- both German brands.
Scene 3:
- Montage of Martin using different types of gadgets
- Pace is created in how quickly he learns new skills and picks up skills
- contrasts between east/west to display differences and his desire to be in the east with his family and girlfriend
- Dramatic irony- family don't know what happened to Martin, audience do.
- quick cuts from all of the gadgets he uses
- Split screen contrast between east and west is representative of the Berlin wall of during the cold war.
Scene 4:
- Tension built when the commander comes back to his office
- editing style used creates tension through the quick cuts and music
- Pace built in how quickly Martin operates
- First shot was through a window, representative of the spy genre and narrative
- CCTV style camera work to represent spy narrative
- ECU further portray spy narrative through focus on the words "Confidential" & "nuclear"
- Diegetic sound boosted to represent heart beat and anxiety in Martin.
