Music Video introduction blog task

1) What is the purpose of a music video?

To highlight and show the meaning of the song in a video so people can understand. It also could show off dances for the song and so on. Music videos were originally designed as a promotional device to sell the band or artist’s music but have developed over time to become a recognised artform or product in their own right. Modern music videos no longer have the huge budgets of the 1980s and 1990s but digital media means they are now more accessible than ever. Videos such as Psy’s Gangnam Style have received over 3 billion views on YouTube.

2) How has the digital age changed the production and distribution of music videos?

3) Which three major record labels are behind VEVO? What is VEVO and why was it created?

The 3 labels behind VEVO are:

  • Sony Music Entertainment
  • Abu Dhabi Media
  • Universal Music Group
VEVO is a sight and a place where music video are uploaded for people to see. Musicians give their music videos for them to upload because of how many followers they have.

4) What are the key conventions of a music video?

The key conventions of a music video include:

  • Intertextuality
  • Movement
  • Narrative
  • The band/artist
  • Lip Syncing

5) How can narrative be used in music video? Give an example of a music video that uses a narrative.

Narative is used in a music video to promote the song and what it is about. This is seen in Migos's song stir-fri as they you follow them as they try to stop a rival business.

6) What examples are provided in the factsheet for intertextuality in music videos?

The examples provided for intertextuality in music video are:

  • Rudeboy- Rihanna
  • Blink 182- All the Small things
  • Christina Aguilera- Genie in a bottle

  7) Why do audiences enjoy intertextual references in media products?
This is so that when audiences understand and recognise a reference, they feel better and feel like they really know what is going on in the video. This can make the audience feel pleasure when watching the music video.

 8) Read the music video example analysis on page 3 of the factsheet. Select a music video of your own choice and write your own analysis using the following headings:

9) Watch the video for Ice Cube's It Was A Good Day (1993). How did this video set the conventions for later hip-hop music videos?

Ice Cube's- Today was a good day really sets pace for the conventions of hip hop music videos as in it, he is showing off his car to the audience, subliminally, as well as the fact that he is lip syncing in the video, which follows the trend of most music videos as rappers may want to take pride in their work and perform it, which is another convention.

 10) How important do you think music videos are in the marketing and promotion of music artists in 2018? Are music videos essential to a band or artist's success?

Music videos are a staple of what the artist/band thinks of their own art, therefore if the music video does not meet expectations, then perhaps it may signify to the audience that they do not even care about the content that they are creating, which can tarnish an image of anyone.
