The impact of new/digital media on TV: blog task

Go to our Media Magazine archive and read the article on Netflix and the Cultural Industries(MM63 - page 45). Create a blogpost called 'The impact of new/digital media on TV' and answer the following questions:

1) What does the 'industry' concept in A Level Media Studies refer to?

David Hesmondhalgh (pronounced ‘Hez-mun-dalch’) is one of the key theorists that all A level Media Studies students are expected to study and his book The Cultural Industries

2) What does David Hesmondhalgh argue with regards to how the creative industries have changed since the 1980s?

Hesmondhalgh, broadly speaking, argues that since the 1980s there’s been a significant shift in cultural production.

3) Choose the three most significant points Hesmondhalgh makes regarding the changing cultural industries. Why are these the most significant in your view?

There has been an increase in media corporations owning companies in different sectors of the industry. I think this because of how recently Disney have bought marvel and star wars to do the movies with them.

Niche audiences are increasingly targeted. I think this because more and more mainstream films have elements that most niche audiences have.

Globalisation has meant media texts can circulate more easily across borders reducing North American dominance. This is true because more people have become interested in films like the marvel movies and even from japan with the anime.

4) What is technological convergence?

Where new technologies are created that take over from past technologies and do the dame thing but now evolving the way content is accessible.
5) How are technology companies challenging traditional broadcasters in the TV industry?

Amazon and Netflix began producing original TV series to compete with them. Netflix also was an online postal DVD service, which took away from the scheduled programming TV would have and switched it to on-demand viewing
6) What budgets will Netflix, Amazon and Apple spend on original programming next year?

Netflix: $8bn
Amazon: $4.5bn
Apple: $1bn

7) How many countries are Netflix and Amazon available in?

Netflix: 190
Amazon: 200

8) The global nature of modern television means producers are having to consider international audiences when creating content. What example from Netflix does the article use to explain this?

In the show Stranger thing they named a monster after a demon prince in the game Dungeons and Dragons which is predominantly part of mostly American cultural importance. Many countries understand American culture as their second culture.

9) Do you think technology companies such as Google, Facebook and Amazon will increase their interest in the television industry?

I think they will as even amazon now has already got amazon prime where you can watch movies from and google have their own space in the store where you can buy movies and Facebook will do it as their competitor youtube does so they can catch up by getting movies added on.

10) How do changes in technology influence the creation of TV dramas such as Capital or Deutschland 83? How?

The advance in technology allows for companies to produce high budget content that can be viewed and streamed online for people worldwide to view. Services such as Netflix allow for TV dramas to be streamed on a popular website for people to watch on demand whenever they please. On demand also for people who have missed the program on TV to watch back in their free time whenever. This allows for TV drams to get an increase in views if the audience have missed out on an episode.
